Mum Bun or Beach Breeze? Finding Your Perfect Newborn Photo Vibe

Another common question I get from new parents is, “Should we do our newborn photos at home or out on location?” (I do get these questions a lot. This isn’t one of those… “People asked me about my skincare routine” instagram situations)

The truth? There’s no right or wrong answer (obvs) it’s all about what feels most comfortable for you. Each option has its own kind of magic, and both can lead to really beautiful photos that feel like YOU and reflect this special (and new and scary and amazing!) time in your lives.

Let’s break it down.

At Home - Where the Heart (and the Nappies) Are

Home sessions are hands-down the most relaxed option for most families, especially in those hazy, early weeks. You don’t have to pack a thing, no rushing out the door, and if there’s a surprise poo explosion or milk spew mid-session, you’re already right where you need to be.

There’s something really sentimental about photographing your baby in the home you brought them into. It’s your safe space. Your backdrop of everyday moments. One day, you’ll look back and see the couch you spent hours feeding on, the window where the light fell across their tiny face, and the little details that make up this chapter of your story.

And please!!!!! Don’t stress about clutter or small spaces. Whether you’re in Narrabeen, Dee Why, Manly, or Avalon, I’ve photographed beautiful newborn sessions in homes of every shape and size. It’s amazing what I can do with just one good window in a tiny apartment.

Pros:

  • Ultimate comfort for you and baby

  • Sentimental - the setting tells your story

  • Easy to pause for feeds, changes, or breaks

  • Baby stays warm and settled

Cons:

  • You might feel the urge to “tidy” (but honestly, chaos is part of the story if you can bare to let it go)

  • Lighting can vary… but don’t worry, that’s my problem, not yours

Outdoors - Fresh Air & Natural Beauty

Outdoor newborn sessions are an amazing option if you love the idea of wide-open space, fresh air, and golden light. We are so spoilt for choice on Sydney’s Northern Beaches!!! Maybe you hit the Long Reef walk frequently through pregnancy, or spent a lot of time at Clontarf where the toddler could also be entertained! Or maybe there’s a park like that feels special to your family. These sentimental locations make for incredible storytelling backdrops.

Outdoor sessions often feel a little more adventurous and full of life. If your baby is a few weeks old and you’re feeling up to it, these shoots can be really beautiful. Just keep in mind that if the weather’s chilly, we’ll keep bub wrapped up tight and focus more on family cuddles than naked newborn shots.

Pros:

  • Stunning natural backdrops

  • You don’t have to feel like you should clean the house

  • Great for incorporating siblings and pets

  • Feels relaxed, candid, and connected

Cons:

  • Weather can be unpredictable

  • Harder to capture those delicate close-up details if the weather is chilly

  • Slightly more logistics for feeds and outfit changes
