My favourite photo locations on Sydney’s Northern Beaches

(and Why I Love Them)

Planning a family photo shoot but stuck on where to go?
I’m spilling the beans! As a local photographer and mum of three wild-hearted little ones, I know that choosing the right location can make all the difference. Not just for the photos, but for the entire experience.

So I’ve pulled together my top five favourite kinds of spots on the Northern Beaches. I say kinds of spots because there are way too many gorgeous places to narrow it down to five actual locations. You’ll see what I mean.

These are locations I’ve come back to again and again because they just work! They’re stunning, versatile, and let your family's personality shine through. Whether you're dreaming of windswept beaches, cozy in-home cuddles, or exploring the bush at sunset, this guide will help you pick the perfect spot to tell your family’s story.

Let’s dive in...

The Beach

Really, what’s not to love? The Northern Beaches has some of the most beautiful coastline in the world (bias? Maybe a little. But I stand by it). The sound of waves, golden light, and barefoot energy… beach shoots are always good FUN!

Here are a few of my absolute faves:

  • North Curl Curl: Epic at both sunrise and sunset. The cliff face gives it a dramatic edge and if you’re up for a little exploring, the rock pool and ledge are pure magic!

  • North Narrabeen: Sand dunes + wide open space + beautiful rockpools. Need I say more?

  • Collins Flat (Manly): Quiet, tucked away, and feels like your own private beach. It’s my best kept secret (until now whoops!)

  • Other notable mentions: Long Reef, Turrimetta, Snapperman, Clontarf, Dee Why, Fisherman’s... honestly, I could go on for days.

A quick heads up: Though most kids love the beach sometimes this can work against us depending on their age. If you think your child might be like a heat-seeking missile and gravitate to the waves then sometimes it's best to choose another location unless of course, you're happy to spend most of your time in or near the water (personally, I love this but they're your photos). If you do opt for a beach location and think that maybe you might all end up in the drink then please pack a towel and change of clothes for the ride home.

The Bush

Want something a little more earthy? Nature-filled? Maybe something that reminds you of those “let’s go for a bushwalk as a family” weekends? I’ve got two solid favourites:

  • St Ives Showground: Easy to get to, dreamy golden light at sunset, tree-lined trails, and even logs to perch on. Bonus: I bring bubbles and a blanket because this is not my first rodeo.

  • Red Hill (Beacon Hill): An absolute hidden ruby! I say that because the ground there is a vibrant red and just absolutely magical. It’s not only one of my favourite places to take photos it’s one of my favourite places to just BE.

Things to note: As mentioned both these locations are close to or in the bush so bug spray is a must! Also, Red Hill is a bit of a walk. Not a LONG walk but about 8 minutes on a flat wide dirt track that is used for vehicle access. People have brought prams there before but it's a little bumpy in parts.

The Lake and The Dam

If you’re after something a little quieter than the beach but still want those stunning water views, Narrabeen Lake and Manly Dam are both brilliant options. These spots have a calm, earthy feel and some truly special light, especially at sunrise or sunset.

  • Narrabeen Lakes good ol' Narrabeen Lakes offers some really beautiful locations to watch the sun rise or fall over the water. It's less busy than a beach and offers nice earthy tones to your images. I particularly like Jamieson Park for the added feature of the stacked boats in the background. It has a very bush meets the water-type vibe. Definitely a location to consider.

  • Manly Dam is a real crowd-pleaser, and it’s easy to see why. There’s loads of parking, picnic tables and barbecues if you want to make a whole day of it after your session. I usually head down to Station 4, where the lilypads float just so and the light drops across the water. The energy here is relaxed and fun, and it’s a total win if you’ve got little ones who love to explore.

The Streets

Want to do something different? Let’s get out and explore your local area, or one of your family’s favourite haunts. A shoot at your local café, grabbing ice cream, scootering through the streets of Manly, or shooting hoops at the park! All brilliant, all real.

Photos don’t have to mean beige linen at the beach. Let’s go somewhere that feels like you. Love burgers? Let’s go to your fave burger shop!!! Having something to DO on your shoot can make for some truly beautiful images. Getting ice cream, visiting your fave coffee shop, going for a surf, skateboard, playing a bit of basketball... it not only makes for some fun energetic photos but it's certain to win the kid's tick of approval too! No bribes needed!

Your Home

Nothing beats the comfort of your own space. Kids are more relaxed, and we can document your real, everyday magic. Jumping on the bed, cuddles on the couch, backyard cricket, sprinklers and hoses in summer. It’s ALL good!

Also! Zero travel required (for you not me). 10/10 recommend. Plus if there's a poo explosion or someone's in need of a snack break it's an easy fix. You also know the safety of your own home so there are no surprises there.
